Spoken Column Drawbacks and Benefits
In a few hours I will be reading this column (in Dutch) at an Immovator meeting in Hilversum. More information in my previous post.
It is the first time I will be using this format for a public appearance. Normally I just write down a few titles for anecdotes or theories I want to talk about and then use that to talk for as long as I have time. I prepare by thinking really hard about what I want to talk about in advance and then improvise as I give my speech.
There are drawbacks and benefits to that strategy. The benefits are that the stories might be more personal and flexible but the drawback is that I might just completely forget my point when I’m on stage. Not that hat has ever happened to me but the fear alone is giving me the shakes every time.
So today I wrote down my whole story in advance. This has its drawbacks and benefits too. The drawback is that you can go back and keep making changes to the text indefinitely (or at least until you have to go on stage) and the whole thing takes a lot more time than you think. The benefit is that once you are finished you don’t have to be nervous at all about going on stage later.

one of the advantages of writing it in front is that you can share it afterwards also with the people who couldn’t attend the speaking *subtle hint* ;-)

Your speech was inspiring, it filled in a few of the blanks and was well thought through. The presentation of the speech itself could have been done with a tad more enthusiasm, but on the other hand, I am not sure if that wouldnt have made the point of the speech all watery…
Either way, it was great seeing you again :)
