Daniel Ashes and Stolen Works of Art

Daniel Ashes Exhibition

We are at the FotoFestival Naarden with Daniel Ashes who has his work on display here. At least, that was the plan.

A few years ago I was here too with Daniel, Gijs M., Lucas L., Hugo B. and Vivianne Sassen. But we arrived in the middle of the night. She was unhappy with her work and wanted it removed. The organization didn’t want to remove it so we volunteered to remove it for her, in the middle of the night.

We didn’t think much of it but the media did. It made the front page of almost every newspaper in the Netherlands.

So today we returned to see Daniels work. As we arrived at the spot where his work was supposed to be a guy came up to us (with the grey hair) and asked us if there weren’t originally four photos. Daniel said that there were. The guy then told us he had just alerted the organization that one of the photos must have been stolen. You can see here that only three portraits are left.

He then continued to tell us that a similar thing happened a few years ago with Vivianne Sassen.

“In her case it turned out that she herself had removed the work! It made every frontpage of every newspaper in the Netherlands! Didn’t you hear about it?!”

Well yeah, we did.

Daniel didn’t find out until yesterday evening when he read his name in a newspaper. He submitted his work and never heard anything after that. No invitation or anything.
