What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?
This is a question I often ask myself. It is an important thing to think about and my feeling is you are never too old to ask yourself. What I am going to do is answer these questions myself here and then ask a few other people to do the same.
It will be interesting to see how things have turned out for everybody and what kind of dreams people still have.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
As a kid:
I wanted to be God. Seriously. I didn’t really understand the concept I guess and changed it to ‘Millionaire‘ later.
As a teenager:
I wanted to become an artist. I painted a lot, did photography and eventually went to art school.
Right now:
A succesful Internet Entrepreneur. I would love to have another company that is extremely popular with users and grows with thousands of users every day.
Later:
One day I hope to become a VC and invest more in other start-ups. Some of the people I look up to are Tim O’reilly and Nicholas Negroponte. They are surrounded by people who are shaping our future and are actively taking part in that. That is what I want to do too.
Alternative:
If I had to chose another profession I would like to become a cook. I enjoy cooking very much and would like to be better at it.
I’m inviting Patrick de Laive, Huub Koch, Robert Gaal, Tanja de Bie and Erwin Blom to write about what they want to be when they grow up on their blogs.
Commercial Message:
Even grownups can be anything they want to be. Consider getting your degree in anything from psychology to engineering.

As a kid:
I wanted to be a sportsteacher. God knows why. I guess because i liked to sport. Wasn’t that bad at tabletennis!
As a teenager:
A pop star! Didn’t do bad. Played countries like England, US, Belgium, Germany etcetera. Did 5 sessions for the late John Peel, even made it to the ‘Hit Dossier’. Minor popstar ;-)
Right now:
After finishing the school of journalism, made a living for years as a freelance journalist. Ended up doing what i do now, being head of new media at VPRO. Enjoy doing so.
Later:
That’s a difficult one. I want to follow my passion. Is it new media? Is it music? Is it publishing? Is it a combination of those? It is working with more people? Or is it working with less? Undecided! But when i’m seeing how enthusiastic i still am about the new (Twitter!), new media seems to be my playing field, at least for the next couple of years!
But:
If i’d be young again, music would still be the goal. I still make music and there is nothing better than starting an evening with nothing and ending an evening with the best song that’s ever been written. Ofcourse you know better the next day ;-) , but that feeling ….. good ….

As a kid: I wanted to drive a crane and be a professional wrestler/ ballerina. I also wanted to be a monkey, as my cousins kept leaving me in trees..but even at that age, I knew that was a lofty goal!
As a teenager: I wanted to be in construction. I didn’t know what or how, but building has always been at my core. I also wanted to be a comedian.
Right Now: I LOVE my career. I’m a Project Manager for a Construction Company and I get to watch a project go from a lot of dirt to a major office building, restaurant, mall, or hotel. The hours are intense but, like with anyone who loves what they do, it’s worth it and not as bad as we sometimes think it is!
Later: If I ever decide to get hitched and have rugrats, I’ll try to evolve my career into a consulting business for Construction Management teams and focus on my writing. Then maybe I’ll buy some land in Bassano, Italy, hang out with my friends there and eat gelato–Life is too short to work forever!
What do I want to be? A child psychologist. I’ve spent the past 8 years in schools getting my undergrad and now my graduate psychology degree. Some day soon, I’ll be able to work with families and their children to do some good! Thanks for the great post!!
