Esprit d’Escalier

Its a phrase the French use to describe the brilliant reply you come up with, too late.

Someone insults you and try to say something funny, smart or powerful. You fail miserably. Then, once you are back home, you come up with a great reply. Too late.

That is ‘Esprit d’Escalier’.
