Sprout cover and Suit Supply photo similarities?

February 8th, 2007

One of the Sprout website readers pointed me to a photo which Carli Hermes made for Suit Supply which has a similar theme as the Sprout cover photo with me on it.

Carli Hermes Photo

The photos are very different but do have a similar concept. See for yourself:

Here is a link to the original Photography session with Martin Dijkstra.

The issue with me on the cover will be available in bookstores tommorow.

How to bluf your way into: DNA code

February 8th, 2007

Actual DNA under a microscopeA few facts that might be helpful if you want to bluf your way into DNA sequencing.

The complete DNA sequence of a human being is only about 3 gigabytes and can easily be fitted on a DVD.

A, T, G, and C are the “letters” of the DNA code; they stand for the chemicals adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine that make up the nucleotide bases of DNA. Each gene’s code combines the four chemicals in various ways to spell out 3-letter “words” that specify which amino acid is needed at every step in making a protein.

Here is a sample DNA format:

New Word of the Week: Valorisation

February 7th, 2007

MarxI received a newsletter today with this word in it and decided to look it up.

Invented by Marx and first described in Das Kapital. In my own words: if you hire someone you pay him a certain amount of money. He starts working and earning money. Your goal wouldn’t be just for him to earn his wages back but to earn YOU more than you pay HIM. When that starts to happen your capital starts valorising. This is called the valorisation of capital. Marx didn’t think this was a good thing.

I hope I got it right but suggest you look it up in a dictionary anyway and then try to use it tomorrow at work and let me know how that turns out. A few possible ways to use it:

“We should try to valorize this project”
“I don’t get the feeling that this company is valorizing its capital to the max”
“We have a huge valorizing opportunity here!”
“Can I valorize that for you?”

Sprout has a special issue this month about Exit Strategies. They claim that 80% of dutch entrepreneurs have no exit strategy at all. They interviewed me and we had a photography session in my house a few weeks ago. Yesterday Louis Hoeks from Sprout came by at IPAN with a brand new Sprout with me on the cover!

More photos on Flickr, video interview and article will be published on Sprout website next week. paper version should also be available in stores by next week.

UPDATE: whole article is online now. Read it here.

Video: We Are The Machine…

February 7th, 2007

Here’s a brilliant video by Michael Wesch, Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University. It is a beautiful way of not only explaining but also showing how Web2.0 works. He doesn’t use PowerPoint (duh!) but the actual Web2.0 tools to demonstrate his point.

Really beautiful and hugely inspiring.

Watch it and remember it…

IPAN Launch Event

IPAN Launch Event.

Yesterday I attended the IPAN Launch Event. It was the second Launch event we hosted. The first one was in 2006 and had a similar set-up: a lot of projects and companies about to launch present their companies at small tables in a big room. People walk around and get personal demos and presentations.

We also had a jury (Johan van Mil, Han Gerrits and Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten) who spoke with all the companies and chose a winner. The winner was YelloYello.nl who received an Apple iPod Shuffle.

This is a photo of the BlogAds.nl table. Polle de Maagt was there talking to people about their product. The table looked really good with all those papers and bright light.

More photos at the IPAN Flickr Account.

Other companies that presented themselves were: Fleck, Swoot, T-signers, Zygomatics, Start 1-2, Tomap, Rasasa, Ted/Snackbar, Sync, Butterfly, Original Signal / Stillpoint, 14dayz, Leadz and a few others I forget…

Also present were a few journalists and publishers so I’m expecting some stories to appear today. And here they are:
IDG Blog: “Internet is (weer) echt hip; de IPAN Launch 2007
Sprout: “Internetondernemers vol hoop
Marketingfacts: “IPAN Launch Event: Gouden Gids killer beste concept
BlueAce: “IPAN Launch Event 2007: projects du jour!

Forget SETI! Find Jim Gray!!!

February 6th, 2007

Jim GrayJim Gray went out sailing and never returned. Coastguard gave up on him after a few days. Then Amazon stepped in and uploaded thousands of satellite images of the area where Jim is missing. They ask people to check the images and look for signs of a small boat. I just checked one hundred images for “foreign objects” and it only took me 10 minutes. Imagine actually finding him!

It feels very rewarding to help this way. Give it a try too!
