Invited to Joost.com but won’t join…
This weekend I received an invitation to betatest the Joost.com application. I’m interested in checking it out but I can’t. The software isn’t available for Mac, yet…
Why would any company launch something like this and not launch a Mac version at the same time?
We all know that only a small percentage of the world uses a Mac. But it should be known by now that those people that do are more likely to be early adopters, bloggers, connectors, buzzers and journalists.

I remember a company that launched a Firefox extension of its software while ignoring Explorer for a while. Unbelievable, isnt it :)
Incredible! But when you think about it it might have not been such a bad idea! The same logic applies: most people use Explorer but people who use Firefox are more likely to try new stuff. So IF you have to chose I would have chosen Firefox too.

I think you should use both (or even more) systems. especially if you are a online entrepreneur.
Joost hasn’t actually launched yet, so that’s one reason… Furthermore they used the Mozilla code base for their client, one of the important reasons for doing that is the portability to other platforms like the Mac or Linux. So it will come, but why should they do it at the same time when they’re still in beta?
Michiel: I own a Dell and it sits next to my Mac on my desk.
Yme: part of the goal of the beta is getting people to notice the product. If you exclude Mac users you will only get negative feedback from those users.
Actually, it wasnt about you. But if you want it to be, than that’s fine with me ;)
By the way, Firefox are more likely to try new stuff?? Why? How? Where is the research?
Hi Janneke; the fact that you are using Firefox means you tried something new. Its not a default browser and you have to take the effort to download and install it.
Am curious if Joost (whats in a name and why change it to Joost..) will deliver. Have posted a request for beta testing this weekend but seeing the amount of media coverage am not counting on participation.
Boris, I don’t see a lot of negative feedback (from Apple users), so I don’t think the impact of that will worry them a lot during Beta… Was Skype available for the Mac during Beta? I don’t think so. Did that hurt them?
Yme: Skype kwam (op 31 augustus, 2004) precies een jaar na launch (29 augustus 2003) met een (langverwachte) Mac versie met deze opmerking:
“The Mac community represents an important market that values style, innovation and ease of use.â€
Op dat moment had Skype ‘nog maar’ 8 miljoen gebruikers. Als je naar deze grafiek kijkt zie je dat vlak daarna (zoek de ‘knik’ in de grafiek) de groei enorm begon toe te nemen. Het is wat kort door de bocht om te zeggen dat dat alleen door Mac gebruikers kwam maar toch zou je denken dat het een goed idee is om die er vroeg bij te betrekken:

Het is inderdaad wat kort door de bocht, om niet te zeggen volslagen onzin, om te stellen dat de grote groei van Skype mogelijk is gemaakt door een handjevol mac gebruikers. Feit is dat de meeste sites and software zich richten op de grootste groep, windows/explorer users dus deze zijn per definitie innovatiever dan mac gebruikers. Per slot van rekening doe je nu zelf ook niet mee met Joost.com
Janneke: Skype is vooral zo gegroeid omdat het een geweldig product is. Dat is waar en dus zal die groep Mac gebruikers zeker niet de doorslag hebben gegeven. Toch lijkt het me beter om als starter wél die Mac gebruikers te ondersteunen. Zie het zo: als je kunt kiezen tussen je product verkopen aan 10 gebruikers zonder vrienden of netwerk of aan één journalist die er over schrijft in de krant zodat vervolgens 10.000 mensen er over lezen dan kies je toch snel de tweede optie. Ook al heeft de eerste groep de meerderheid. Het lijkt zo te zijn dat veel journalisten, bloggers en netwerkers een Mac gebruiken, graag eerder dingen testen en als ze er blij mee zijn dat delen met veel andere mensen. Als je dus iets nieuw sgaat opzetten lijkt het me verstandig om meteen je te mikken op de groep die je product het best kan testen en promoten. Kwaliteit boven kwantiteit dus…

Comment van Phil geld ook voor mij : zit wel op een Joost uitnodiging te wachten…. Eigenlijk zou iedereen in Nederland een invitation moeten krijgen : Joost is er gevestigd en Nederlanders blijken voorop mee te lopen daar waar het gaat om internetgerelateerde aangelegenheden

Phil’s comment also applies to me : still waiting for a Joost invitation…. Shouldn’t all dutchmen obtain one as Joost is (now) based in the Netherlands and because the dutch are an “innovative” population regarding internet-related bussiness..
