Diner with Marc Canter
Yesterday (Friday december 15, 2006) I hosted another Informal Diner Party. These parties are a recurring event and I have hosted quite a few the last two years. Usually we have a guest from outside of the Netherlands visiting Amsterdam who I then invite for diner. Then I also invite local entrepreneurs or just friends and end up with 10 tot 20 people who don’t know each other or only by name.
Last night Marc Canter was our special guest and I invited 14 other people to have diner with us. Diederik Martens (Twones.com) and I did most of the shopping and cooking but at these diners everybody helps with everything.
One memorable event was when I asked Marc to notify everyone that we needed to get the dishes to the kitchen. He said “Sure, should I use Verdi?” I had no idea what he meant so replied “Yeah, that would be great”. So Marc got up from his chair and started singing, quite loud too, a classical scene from a Verdi Opera for about 3 minutes. The whole room went silent and everybody listened. After he finished everybody appluaded Marc and then he simply said “Oh, Boris asks you if you could all bring your plates to the kitchen…

Other guests were Anina and Fiona from Anina.net and 36 Fashion magazine, Paul Smits and Raimo van der Klein from KPN, Tanja de Bie from Daags.nl, Marja Ruigrok from Ruigrok/netpanel, Ronnie Overgoor from Pitchmanagement.nl, Syb Groeneveld from Kennisland.nl, Esme Vos from MuniWireless.com, Thomas van de Weerd from SBS and Arjen and Patrick from Fleck.com.
We started the evening with a glass of champagne. Then we had melted french camembert with honey and rosemary. The second course was broiled oysters with red peppers and a special secret sauce. Then we had pasta with seaweed, sun-dried and marinated tomatoes and Ensis americanus (Also know as Ensis directus or the dutch “Scheermessen”). For desert we had ‘Fruit soup’ which consists of fresh fruits such as Mango, passion-fruit and mellon. I also add rum and sorbet ice to it.
The guests brought wine and more champagne and after diner we had some thee and cognac.
A great evening!

Filed under Business, Fun, Personal | Comment (0)Poll: did you like Le Web 3?
A lot of stuff is happening at this moment and it all has to do with Le Web 3 and Loic Lemeur. Some people seem to be “Assholes“, People are being fired, and some people aren’t saying anything or are even disabled from being able to say anything by people who say “Asshole“. Follow me?
A lot (or a little) of people are upset with Loic Lemeur or LeWeb (also reffered to as LePolitics or LeBackLash) about, well, a lot! But is everybody upset or is it just one or two people who complain about everything anyway?
It is time for a scientific poll! I want to know how many of the 1000+ visitors of Le Web 3 liked the conference and how many are unhappy.
Can all 1000+ visitors of Le Web 3 please report to me a soon as possible and participate in this poll? Thank you for your assistence.
If you know someone else who visited LeWeb3 please send them over. And to quote Larry Flynt: “Opinions are just like assholes, everybodys got one†so please give us yours! (Opinion, not Asshole!). We need every vote we can get!
UPDATE: the poll was reset due to a Database error. Please feel free to vote again!
UPDATE 2: the Poll seems to corrupt my Database server. The whole thing was down again for two hours today. I leaving the Poll out for now to see if that indeed causes these problems. Please use the comments to leave your opinion…

last night the Database server of my hosting company crashed and took my blog with it. All posts since tuesday are gone. No censorship here (I think) but just a good old server crash! Any tips on how to retrieve the older posts, anyone?

Besides all the negative feedback you are reading we ALSO had lots of fun in Paris as you can see in this photo. Also check all the other beautiful photos that Guido made.
Loic Lemeur reacts to Techcrunch critical post: “Asshole”
You have to see it to believe it. Follow the link and read the critical but fair post from Techcrunch. Then scroll down to Loic Lemeurs comment and my comment beneath it…
TechCrunch UK » Blog Archive » Le Web3 the good, bad and ugly.
Now Techrunch has posted a reaction to Loic’s comment too. This is starting to get interesting! I see that Jeff Clavier is reading all of this too (I can tell because his photo shows up in the MyBlobLog Widget) so I’m sure that both Jeff and Loic will answer shortly too.
Sometimes silence is gold.
Not today, not with blogging…
UPDATE: the comment is indeed from Loic Lemeur as Sam Sethi confirmes in a comment on his own blog post.
UPDATE 2: and now Sam Sethi is fired by Michael Arrington for “unethical behaviour”! Wow!!! This is more exciting than TV!
The actual reason for the firing of Sam is not that he wrote something negative about the conference but the fact that he posted a story about Loic’s remark and added that Techrunch will host its own conferences in the future. I can understand that that is less than elegant but I wouldn’t say it is enough to fire someone. And it most people won’t hear about that and just assume it is because Sam and Loic got into a fight and Loic called Michael and then Michael fired Sam. I think it might be a good idea for Michael to put a post up at Techcrunch.co.uk (there is a post on Crunchnotes) explaining the whole thing.
UPDATE 3: I’m hosting a poll here with the final question: did you like Le Web 3?
UPDATE 4: Mike Butcher, the other editor of Techcrunch.co.uk, writes and open letter to Mike Arrington with his regisnation. He quotes my blogpost. Am I famous now?
UPDATE 5: after almost a week Loic Lemeur finally reacts on his blog. I also found this post from Ouriel (Techcrunch France) giving us a list of people who liked the conference. In fact, if you look at the list closely and actually read each one you will find that a bunch of them are from french people, speakers or people close to the organisation. One of the points being made in the other more negative posts is that the French politicians were of no interest at all for people outside of France. And even the positive posts are full of partly hidden criticism.
And this brings me to the end of the whole LeWeb3 discussion. I’m getting tired of the whole thing. Next year we will see how many people return. I personally had a GREAT time at Le Web 3 even though I didn’t like some parts of the conference and do think that it would have been nice, and smart, if Loic would have admitted to that earlier. Frankly; saying ‘Asshole’ to someone who expresses a negative opinion is like saying ‘Asshole’ to everyone with any critisism. I think it is better to promote critisism and learn from it.
But I’m not Loic…
