Aaaaah, mu MacBook Pro came back to life after about 3 hours of panic. Scott Rafer helped me with the brilliant suggestion of starting up in ’save mode’. That worked!

    There are at least 3 different magic key combinations to throw at it. I don’t actually know them all offhand, but one of the important ones:

    hold the power button down long enough so that the sleep indicator starts blinking. You’ll get a very scary beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep but if your hardware is on the fritz that can help.

    the other one is just ‘option’ - sometimes the boot device configuration gets confused.

    The third one resets the PRAM. It’s cmd+shift+alt+ctrl+P except not with quite that many modifiers.
