September 8th, 2006

UuPatrick just emailed me that if you search for The Next Web at Google and Yahoo you get the website for The Next Web Conference as the first result. Very cool!

Update: and also cool is this Gahooyoogle.com service. It lets you searche both Yahoo and Google in two frames so you can see what the difference in results is. Try it!

Next to Fleck.com and my other projects I’m also chairman of the Interactive Professionals Association Netherlands (better know as IPAN). Normally IPAN has a monthly meeting every first tuesday or the month. This month the meeting wwill be held on the second tuesday of the month, september 12th. The reason is that we have a special guest.

His name is David Fleck and he is vice-president of Linden Labs, the company behind Second Life. I suggest you all come and listen to his story.More information on the IPAN website: http://www.ipan.nl/

Bookmarklet/Javscript help needed

September 4th, 2006

Searcle.com isn’t finished yet and I’m sure it will take a few more weeks to get it good enough to open up to everyone. But the basic functionality is working very well and we do ask some of our friends to test stuff and provide feedback.

Searcle isn’t in BETA but in CUBA which stands for ‘inCUBAtion period’. I’m developing live on the server to sometimes you can see the changes appear from minute to minute. Its a great way to develop because you can test everything live and in real time without having to wait for the next deployment of fresh code. It won’t work once we have more users but for now I’m happy with it.

The Bookmarklet now works in Firefox and Safari but still not in Explorer. If you know something about Javascript and want to take a look at it please do. Immortal fame (on the download page) will be yours.

Think Universally

September 1st, 2006

A while ago we were given a certain formula by an investor to calculate the user growth of our company. We applied the formula to our numbers and then concluded the formula had to be wrong because the numbers didn’t seem to make any sense. The next day met the investor and told him that we couldn’t use the formula because it didn’t work. He replied that the formula couldn’t be wrong. Then we explained:

“If we apply the formula to our numbers we end up with more users after 2 years than there are people in the world.”

Without hesitating he answered:

“Yeah that is good. We want you to think universally, not globally… ”
