New name won’t help!

September 23rd, 2006

Turns out that at about the same time that I deleted my OpenBC account they changed the name of the service from OpenBC to Xing. Nice, but it won’t chance a thing.

Their new tagline will be ‘Powering Relationships’…

In my previous post I think I explained a bit that just powering relationships isn’t going to be exciting enough in 2007. You will also have to sync addressbooks, provide music recommendations or do something else with your service because just connecting to a few hundred people isn’t enough.

I have to say that just using social software to collect contacts is at best counter productive and at worst it is downright annoying. It is certainly not the purpose for which we designed openBC and we actively discourage contact collectors.

openBC was designed to allow people to see the contacts of their peers and thereby actually make new business opportunites. The platform was also designed to facilitate introductions between people.

If your key activity on openBC was to collect contacts then that was not really using the platform for what it was designed for.

Hi Bill, thanks for the comment. Although I agree with your statements I also was hoping for a more detailed reaction on my theory that social networking just for the sake of networking is becoming less interesting.

I mean, how many businessopportunities do people actually find through Social Networks? I could offer you a succes story (or 2) of business being done through OpenBC but those seems to be the exceptions.

It would be interesting to hear from you what OpenBC will offer next to just introductions to other OpenBC members.
