Working & Thinking

August 21st, 2006

5_08-augustus-97.gifI have been reading Wired magazine since 1996. Once I started reading it I couldn’t stop. Now I collect them and try to get my collection complete. Old magazines are generally nothing more than nostalgic but old Wired articles are still interesting, even years later.

Often when I’m sitting somewhere, staring at the sky or seemingly doing nothing I think about a quote from Risto Linturi, the professional futurist for Noka, which I read years ago. A few minutes ago I picked a random old copy from my collection and found the quote again. Here it is:

A friend of Linturi tells me that he once called her when he was walking his dog, and she asked if he was working. “Of course I’m working,” he replied. “I’m thinking.”

So, have you been thinking lately?

You can read the whole article here: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/7.09/nokia.html

And if you have any old copies of Wired magazine let me know. The issues I’m still looking for are 4.07 (july 96), 5.08 (august 97) and 11.08 (august 2003).

It seems you are intent on studying sociological patterns mainly in economic foundations of various start-ups. But one cannot mimic such patterns with alternative plans, it almost always fails. Indeed copying components of successful business ethics (don’t do evil?) can often serve promising, but don’t let other variables oppress your creativity.

Any idea succeeds simply because of supply and demand, and its value (price and quality determines value of product). Assuming the company can sustain itself, with enough dough.

    Hi Some Body,

I strongly believe that a good idea with enough supply and good quality and value isn’t enough to build a succesful company. If the management sucks, the timing isn’t right or some other fundamental part is off the whole thing will fall apart. I often speak to people who think that just because they have a good idea they should have a good businessopportunity. But things arent that simple…

[...] Just before the end of the year I bought a new Wired Magazine. Some of you know I collect Wired Magazines and now own every single Wired ever published. Fleck.com is based on a Wired Article by Kevin Kelly and I am often inspired by articles, even articles in older magazines. [...]
